A Budget Road Trip Across Iceland’s Ring Road

Iceland’s Ring Road is the most definitive Road Trip on the Planet. PERIOD.

At mile 10, Reykjavik is already out of sight. At mile 37, cavernous volcanic craters pass by your window. At mile 75, you confront the base of a large basalt ridge littered with waterfalls. By the time you arrive there, though, you will have run out of superlatives.

This is Iceland’s Highway 1, the Ring Road, an 830-mile loop around the nation’s perimeter, which means that you get to see almost the whole country in one go. Iceland’s unique geographical location, far north in the Atlantic and directly atop a massive tectonic divide, begets myriad natural wonders: over 100 volcanos, thousands of waterfalls, geysers, geothermal vents, ice caves and glaciers the size of Luxembourg. It’s all packed so densely on this rock that it’s difficult to drive more than 20 minutes without stopping to gawk.

But I am sure you are aware how prohibitively expensive Iceland is too, which is why we have planned it in a way that wont hurt your pocket bad 🙂

Do you think it can get better than this ?

A Road Trip, across probably the most beautiful country in the world, on a budget, where you actually get to see the whole damn country in a week.

And when we say Road Trip, you know it will never mean a bus packed with tourists.  We’ve got  4 WD Vehicles for this trip because the worst thing you can do in Iceland is save money taking a normal car which will be cheaper but can never handle OffRoading and off the perfect asphalt roads of Iceland is where the real picture perfect treasures are hidden !!!

Facebook Reviews

Awesome people just like you, come for our trips from various cities and countries and we don’t like for it to be too crowded. So we cap the average number per group between 8  – 10 people with a healthy ratio!

These are once-in-a-lifetime experiences, not those touristy hordes being packed up in buses like sheep 🙂

Iceland Road Trip Tentative Itinerary

*Subject to changes depending on weather and group consensus

Day 1 : Reykjavik

Reach Reykjavik anytime as per the most convenient flight and check in into your Hostel. In the second half of the day we celebrate Icelandic Summer in the gorgeous Blue Lagoon which is on almost everyone’s Bucket list. We spend quality time relaxing in the warm misty waters of the Lagoon, your entry ticket to this expensive but incredible Spa is already taken care of.

Welcome to Iceland ! 🙂

We spend the rest of the evening exploring the city and all it has to offer..Galleries, Cafes, Street Art, Night life its all there for us

Day 2 : Akureyri via Western Iceland

We start our Iceland Road Trip making the journey towards the northern capital, Akureyri. Along the way, we could stop for some ice cream in Borgarnes (perfect for a summer’s day) before taking a short hike up Grábrók tuff volcano further inland in Borgarfjörður. From the top of the crater, we will have incredible views over the region.

There are so many other attractions en route include the historical site Reykholt, the hot spring Deildartunguhver and the sublime and beautiful waterfall, Hraunfossar (“Lava Falls”). Whilst in the area, it is also highly recommended to check out Hvítserkur rock formation, found just near Hvammstangi.

We drive most day from Reykjavík to Akureyri while checking out many awesome sights, so be ready for a day filled with driving. Fear not, however, for the scenery along the way makes it all worthwhile.

On the way we will also stop to descend into the lava cave Víðgelmir which was formed in an eruption over a thousand years ago, this incredible excursion is also already paid for and part of the package.

When we finally arrive in Akureyri, we grab a meal in town and enjoy the city’s nightlife.

Day 3 – Akureyri, Lake Myvatn and Egilsstaðir

On the third day of your trip, we will have ample time to enjoy the sights and sounds of Akureyri; the city boasts a botanical garden, boat trips, beautiful scenery and excellent shopping possibilities. When you have finished in Akureyri, we will head towards Lake Mývatn.

Whilst on our journey, we will stop off at the stunning Goðafoss waterfall, the Námaskarð geothermal area and the dark volcanic fortress known as Dimmuborgir. Though naturally formed, the lava formations at Dimmuborgir make it appear like some fantastical spooky castle.

After exploring Dimmuborgir and Lake Mývatn, we will end our day at the Mývatn Nature Baths. These warming baths are open until midnight during the summer, leaving us just enough time for the two-hour drive to Egilsstaðir, the capital of the East. We could also skip the baths, and  make a diversion to Iceland’s most powerful waterfall, Dettifoss.

We will then continue over the Möðrudalsöræfi heights to reach our accommodation for tonight, in the town of Egilsstaðir by the Lögurinn Lake.

Day 4 – Egilsstadir to South-East Iceland  via Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon

From our overnight base at Egilsstaðir, it is only a short drive to Hallormsstaðaskógur, Iceland’s largest forest and a perfect stop off on your way to Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon. We drive through East Iceland while keeping an eye out for Reindeers as this is the only part of the country where they can be found roaming wild.

The main highlight of our day, however, is inarguably the glacier lagoon, Jökulsárlón, and the nearby Diamond which captivates everyone by the enormous glittering icebergs floating down from the glacial tongue out toward the ocean.

From the lagoon, it is a short stroll down to the black beach nearby, called Diamond Beach due to the many icebergs scattered along it. With the Atlantic Ocean’s waves crashing on them, we can expect an incredible view.

We will be staying in a hostel around the area tonight.

Day 5 – Southeast Iceland to Hella/Hvolsvöllur via Vik and Skaftafell

On the fifth day of our Iceland Road Trip, we could spend further time checking out the glacial lagoon, given the fact that its beauty is transient and ever changing depending on the weather. We could also fit in a boat trip here (optional), but photography and nature enthusiasts will want to take special care looking for the playful seal colonies. After this we will drive towards Skaftafell Nature Reserve.

This is the day when we could go in for an optional but highly recommended glacial hike as it adds an entirely new level of adrenaline and adventure to your trip. It is also the best way to experience a glacier up close in all its glory. From the summits of Vatnajökull, you will have truly magnificent views over the surrounding area.

We will continue to drive along the South Coast enjoying the views of Vatnajökull, finally arriving at the charming town of Kirkjubæjarklaustur. From here, you can also explore the picturesque Fjaðrárgljúfur canyon.

Next along the Ring Road is the fishing village of Vík, which in turn is very close to Reynisdrangar rocks and the black sand beach, Reynisfjara. Be careful whilst exploring this beach, however, as the waves here are strong and unpredictable.

On the final part of your days’ journey, we will stop off at two of the South Coast’s most gorgeous waterfalls, Skógafoss and Seljalandsfoss, the latter of which can be walked behind to view the landscape around through a veil of falling spring water. Here is just one other location where the Icelandic nature is sure to take your breath away. We will be spending the night in either the town of Hella or the village of Hvolsvöllur.

Day 6 – Golden Circle and Reykjavik

One option for starting your sixth day is by partaking an optional ice cave tour at Mýrdalsjökull glacier that departs from Vík, where we can actually venture into the frozen, subterranean world of the glacier itself, Otherwise we will continue westward to the famous Golden Circle route where you will be able to catch three of Iceland’s most popular spots in one sweep. On our way to the Golden Circle, there is the option for stopping at the town of Flúðir for a spot of bathing in a Secret Lagoon.

We could then check out Gullfoss on the Golden Circle, a mighty waterfall that demonstrates the sheer power of Iceland’s nature by cascading glacial water 30 metres into the gorge below.

Next along the route is the geothermal valley Haukadalur, home to Iceland’s famous geysers. Though the most famous geyser, Geysir, now lies dormant, its neighbour Strokkur erupts every five minutes or so, guaranteeing you’ll see this spectacle in action.

We then will finish our Golden Circle tour with a visit to Iceland’s largest national park, the UNESCO protected Þingvellir. This is one of the most unique locations in Iceland where you we can see both the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates exposed from the earth.

In between these plates is the world-famous Silfra Fissure, one of the most breathtaking and unique snorkelling and scuba diving location in the world. And this is how we end our spectacular journey on this Iceland Road Trip with a tour where you swim and snorkel between two continents!!

Can u think of a better way to end this already spectacular journey ?

When our time in the park is over, we will drive forty-five minutes to Reykjavík, the capital where we will spend the last night.

Day 7 – Fly Back Home From Iceland

We can always spend the day exploring the city for a spot of last minute souvenir shopping or, perhaps, going on a whale watching tour around the adjacent bay. You could even drive out for a closer look at the Reykjanes Peninsula, exploring the lava fields, geothermal areas and conical volcanoes.

If not undertaken on the first day, now would be the best time to visit the Blue Lagoon before leaving the country, your ticket to the Lagoon is already a part of the package.

It’s time to head to the airport and say goodbye to Iceland with memories and pictures for life 🙂
